Special Olympics in Vernon, a success story!
"If I can not win, let me be brave in the attempt". This is the oath for Special Olympics athletes. It is not always about scoring or winning, but about how we get there and what the path in training has given us.
Since 1980, Special Olympics BC, a registered charitable organization, has provided high-quality sports programs and competitions to meet the needs and interests of individuals with intellectual disabilities.
In the Vernon area more than 100 athletes train and compete in 5 summer and 4 winter sports. They also participate in 2 skill building programs. Golf, introduced in 2009, has been an instant success and has attracted 11 new athletes with more on the waitlist for 2011.
Special Olympics welcomes athletes from a wide range of ages with varying backgrounds, interests, and levels of ability. It provides a variety of opportunities that are suited to diverse needs. Participation in sports provides opportunities for athletes to develop social skills, cultivate friendships, strive for and achieve goals, and increase their self-esteem -- ultimately enriching lives.
